San Francisco sunset photo session

After wedding portraits in casual clothes? Great idea!

More and more couples decide to get their after wedding portraits taken not in wedding outfits but in casual or chic clothes. I am totally on board with this idea for styling, as this creates more possibilities to create even more diverse photographs from all the parts of the wedding – from engagement, through the big day to after wedding photo session. Find inspiration in Wendy and Kyle’s engagement photos that we took almost a year before their wedding. And here is their wedding story from Terrace Room. I love that the Bride felt free to actually style three wedding dresses! How cool is that? The wedding portraits we took in Twin Peaks, San Francisco are a universal souvenir from their love journey. They can hang their portraits above their bed, they will not only remind them of their wedding but of the good time they’ve had together.

Ideas what to wear on a wedding photo session

Anything you feel comfortable in! That’s for sure. Then go for something that underlines your personality, not creates a new image. Skip clothes that that make you feel unnatural. For pre-wedding or after-wedding portraits I would suggest to pick for example your favorite dress or shirt and pants. Tip: flowy, airy dresses are the best for a photo session, they show movement and the wind.

Of course you also both have to match. I make a rule of wearing maximum 3 colors for a photo session and I personally prefer colors of the Earth, like brown and beige, dark green, navy blue, burgundy, black and white, etc. I also like contrasts – one person wearing bright top and the other a dark one, so when I photograph you standing close we can see both silhouettes.
